Toronto Results: Serena Williams Beats Julia Goerges in Straight Sets
Serena Williams beat Julia Goerges in straight sets in her second round match at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, 6-1, 7-6.
After a lopsided first set, Goerges raised her level of play enough to force a second set tiebreak. It took Williams five match points to close out the second set, but Goerges proved unable to make any headway on the Williams serve, earning just two break points, and failing to convert either of those.
Williams was demonstrative during the second set, hollering twice as she earned her fifth match point.
“I even forget that this is only my fourth tournament this year,” an emotional Williams said after the win. “I’m so happy to even be able to be playing now. It’s such a blessing to me.”
Goerges, making 56% of her first serves, won 79% of her first serve points, but it was her second serve that let her down. She only won 42% of those points.
“She’s really good,” Williams said regarding Goerges. “She’s won a few tournaments this year, and she’s beaten top players. She has such a bright future.”
Defending champion and World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki lost in straight sets to Roberta Vinci in the biggest upset of the day.
Qualifier Galina Voskoboeva backed up her first round upset of Marion Bartoli with another solid win over Flavia Pennetta, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Sam Stosur beat Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak, 6-3, 6-4. Agnieszka Radwanska beat qualifier Petra Martic, 6-3, 6-3.
Ana Ivanovic, Andrea Petkovic, Petra Kvitova, Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, Francesca Schiavone, and Lucie Safarova also advanced to the third round.
