Su-Wei Hsieh beats Laura Robson to win Guangzhou Title

World No. 53 Su-Wei Hsieh beat the British World No. 74 Laura Robson 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, to win the WTA title in Guangzhou, her second title in 2012 and in her career.

Robson came out strong, charging out to an early break in the first, but Hsieh’s quirky game proved too strong, and she managed to storm back to take the first set. The World No. 74 was unable to adjust, the top-ranked Taiwanese player hitting winners with her unusual two-handed forehand, and challenging Robson with drop shot returns of serve.

But in the second set, Hsieh had five match points on Robson’s serve, and Robson saved all five, then winning four straight games and the second set.

Just when things looked dire for Hsieh in the deciding set as Robson took a 3-0 lead, Hsieh won five straight games as Robson became increasingly weary in the hot conditions. This time, Hsieh made no mistake serving out the match.

Robson will move into the top 60, while Hsieh will move into the top 40 in the WTA rankings.
