Daily Dispatch: Roger Federer Jokes About Playing for 15 More Years

World No. 1 Roger Federer caught wind of his 15 year ATP ranking anniversary, taking the opportunity to joke about it on Facebook:

“Just heard that over 15yrs ago (9/22/97) as a 16yr old, I made my debut on the ATP rankings…debuting at #803 after picking up 12pts. Here’s to another 15yrs on tour….hahahahah :)

50/50 on whether he was joking or not.

According to Steve G. Tennis, Mardy Fish is out of Shanghai and Tokyo. It is unclear yet whether the withdrawals are related to Fish’s health scare from several months ago.

The Daily Mail interviewed Rafael Nadal in depth. The World No. 4 commented on his recovery process and Andy Murray’s success at the US Open. Nadal also shared some particularly biting words about the large number of hard court tournaments on the ATP Tour:

“I can’t pretend not to play on hard courts when two of the Slams are on hard courts, but there is a mistake with our game,” Nadal said. “You don’t watch footballers playing on a hard surface, or basketball players, those sports with rapid movements. It’s not going to change for me and my generation. Hard courts are very negative for the body. I know the sport is a business and creating these courts is easier than clay or grass, but I am 100 percent sure it is wrong. I may have to play more on clay than before but there aren’t that many options.”

The article suggested that a return for Nadal before the end of the year at the World Tour Finals and Spain’s Davis Cup final would be unlikely, but Nadal said he is aiming to return in time for the 2013 Australian Open.

For USA Today, Bobby Chintapalli interviewed Billie Jean King, who talked about equal prize money, grunting on the WTA Tour, and the resurgence of Serena Williams.

Guillermo Vilas expressed interest in one day becoming the captain of Argentina’s Davis Cup team, a realistic proposition, since their top player Juan Martin del Potro has clashed with current Argentinian Davis Cup captain Martin Jaite. (Link is in Spanish)

World No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska joined Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams in qualifying for the WTA Championships in Istanbul. Four more spots remain for additional qualifiers.
