Federer Clinches 300th Week at World No. 1
World No. 1 Roger Federer clinched his top ranking for a record 300th week, beating his Swiss compatriot Stan Wawrinka, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 in Shanghai to reach the quarterfinals.
Federer struggled early in the match, hitting just two winners in the first set. Though the World No. 1 earned an early break in the second set, Wawrinka fought back to force a tiebreak.
From there, things returned to business as usual for Federer as he took the tiebreak to make it 6-0 in his career in tiebreaks against Wawrinka. He cruised through the deciding set, winning six consecutive games.
In 2012, Federer has delivered “bagel” sets against Rafael Nadal, del Potro, Djokovic, and Wawrinka.
Federer will face World No. 16 Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals.
